From the Homily
of Father Jose
"The
Epiphany of the Lord" |
|
Today we celebrate the feast of Epiphany. “The
Manifestation of God to the Gentiles”. It is the call of God to all
non-Israelites such as Gentiles and pagans of all nations to the
faith.
The Jewish people waited for a Messiah who
would deliver them from the Romans. But we know that Jesus, the
Messiah, came not to deliver his people from political bondage;
rather He came to deliver us from spiritual bondage. In the readings
for today we heard that the Magi came to worship the new born King,
the King of Kings, and the Lord of Lords. The Magi are also known
as the “Three Wise Men from the East” because they knew the truth,
that Jesus is the “King of Kings”.
The Magi came to adore the child Jesus with
gifts of gold, incense and myrrh, which signify the kingship and
priesthood of Christ. They followed the star that led them to the
Messiah. Likewise, we must follow our star to come closer to
Christ. This star may rise in the form of God’s whisper (1 King
19:12), a miracle, a tragedy, or a person. When we see any of these
stars, we must follow it to guide us and lead us to Jesus. We must
rise up in splendor when our light has come, even if we have to make
sacrifices or endure persecutions to follow this star. And then, we
will see this light manifested in our own lives!
Christmas and Epiphany do not last just one
day. It is our attitude and openness to these sacred mysteries that
prepare one to freely give of oneself. We must learn to see God as
He continues to reveal Himself to us in all things and through all
people. As Pope John Paul II once said: “Let us be like that star
that guides others to the light of Christ, so that individuals and
peoples in search of truth, justice and peace may come to Jesus”.
Amen

Prayer For Peace
To Mary, The Light of Hope
Immaculate Heart of Mary, help us to conquer the menace of evil,
which so easily takes root in the hearts of people today, and whose
immeasurable effects already weigh down upon our modern world and
seem to block the paths toward the future.
From famine and war, deliver us. From nuclear war, from incalculable
self-destruction, from every kind of war, deliver us. From sins
against human life from its very beginning, deliver us. From hatred
and from the demeaning of the dignity of the children of God,
deliver us. From every kind of injustice in the life of society,
both national and international, deliver us.
From readiness to trample on the commandments of God, deliver us.
From attempts to stifle in human hearts the very truth of God,
deliver us.
From the loss of awareness of good and evil, deliver us. From sins
against the Holy Spirit, deliver us.
Accept, O Mother of Christ, This cry laden with the sufferings of
all individual human beings, laden with the sufferings of whole
societies. Help us, with the power of the Holy Spirit, to conquer
all sin, individual sin and the "sin of the world,” sin in all its
manifestations.
Let there be revealed once more in the history of the world the
infinite saving power of the redemption. The power of merciful
love.
May it put a stop to evil. May it transform consciences. May your
Immaculate Heart reveal for all the light of hope. Amen
By Pope John Paul II
