From the Homily
Of Father Jose

“Jesus is the Living Water”

When Jesus met the Samaritan woman at the well, she had many options, including that of ignoring Christ and walking away.  But she did not walk away, she was open to the word of God.  Her willingness to listen to the Lord indicates a degree of divine grace already at work in her.  Through Jesus’ talk, He presents God’s offer of salvation to the woman in response to her real human problem of thirst.  Once the woman believed in her own mind that Jesus was telling the truth, she began to desire it in her heart expressing these words:  “Sir, give me this water”.  And when she received the living water, then she realized the true divine nature of Jesus.

For us as well, the gospel effects a saving encounter with Jesus Christ, in which the process of justification begins to take hold of our life.  The word we hear inaugurates the salvific initiative that detaches us from sin.  This establishes in us a holy cooperation between God’s grace and our human freedom.  Are you experiencing the joy and peace of Christ’s living water in your life?  During this season of Lent, God is offering each one of us a time of grace to change our sinful lifestyle and receive His healing power.  Let us receive this living water and transform our lives.  Let us prepare for the glory of the resurrection.

“Whoever drinks the water that I shall give him, says the Lord, will have a spring inside him, welling up for eternal life (Communion Antiphon).  Lord, fill us with our living water so that we may never thirst again.

Making Room

During this Lenten season, we are invited to make room for the Lord.  We live very busy lives.  We are constantly surrounded by noise and activity. Lent is a season to turn off radios and TV sets.

It is a time to sit and reflect.  We can meditate on the Lord’s call in our lives. The Scripture readings used throughout Lent are filled with insights into that call. We can spend time in Eucharistic Adoration. We can attend the Stations of the Cross.  We can take long walks.  We can go away for a day or weekend retreat.

We might attend a parish mission if there is one in our parish or one within traveling distance. We can recommit ourselves to making Sunday the Lord’s day.

Lent is also a time for fasting.  We fast to put food in perspective (for we too often misuse this gift from God).  When we experience hunger, it reminds us that Jesus is the only one who will satisfy our deepest hunger and thirst. We also fast to be one with those who do not have enough to eat ( using the money saved by our fasting to feed the poor).

Finally, one can make room for the Lord by celebrating the beauty with which the Lord has surrounded us. What that actually means depends on our temperament.

For some of us it might mean taking a walk in a forest or visiting a zoo.  Others might read a good book or go to a concert or see a good movie or visit an art gallery.  We might read or write poetry or a journal.

Again, what we do is not what is as important as the fact that we do it in order to make room for the Lord.  We each meet the Lord in our own way.  But we must find the time to meet him.
