From the Homily
Of Father
Jose
“Recognizing Christ in the
Breaking of the Bread”
|
|
The account of the two disciples
on the way to Emmaus captures our human experience well. They
forgot the past good times with Christ and were filled with worldly
cares. They failed to understand the spiritual mission of Christ.
They thought that Jesus was going to liberate the Jewish people from
the Romans. But, Jesus came to liberate all humanity from eternal
slavery. These two disciples had lost their faith in Jesus.
In today’s Gospel we find that
Jesus, the Good Shepherd, had followed the two confused disciples
and brought them back to the fold through His words and the breaking
of the bread. While they were traveling, Jesus explained to them His
mission by interpreting the Scriptures, which referred to Him. But,
when Jesus was about to part on a separate way, the disciples
pressed Him to rest and eat with them.
Jesus did not force Himself on the
two disciples. He wanted to be invited. “While he was with them at
table, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to
them. With that their eyes were opened and they recognized him”
(Luke 24, 30-31).
We have still the risen Lord
present with us every time we celebrate the Eucharistic Sacrifice.
Every moment Jesus breaks the bread for us through His ordained
priests, He is giving Himself to us as our spiritual nourishment.
He fulfilled His promise at
the Last Supper when He instituted the sacraments of the Eucharist
and Holy Orders. Jesus gave the power and the command to His
apostles and their lawful successors to celebrate the Eucharist
for His people until the end of time. If you listen carefully to
Jesus through our Sunday readings, your hearts will be renewed and
you will be able to receive Him fully in the Eucharist.
“Lord Jesus, let me know you
through the Scriptures which you have given us, and also through the
breaking of the bread in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.”
Alleluia
