From the Homily
Of Father Jose

“The Public Ministry of Jesus”

In today’s Gospel, we find that Jesus started His public ministry preaching the importance of repentance.  Changing our sinful lifestyle is necessary to follow Christ.  Nobody wants to change a lifestyle that is contrary to the “spiritual life”.  And so, repentance is the keynote of Jesus’ preaching and of the whole of the Gospel.

The first thing Jesus did when he moved into His new neighborhood was to seek out His companion disciples.  Responding to the summons “Come after me” is not a one-time matter; it requires constant conversion.  Jesus said “whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever does not take up his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me”             (Mt 10:37-38).  If we truly want to follow Jesus, we have to detach ourselves from everything.  Look at all the Apostles, they left everything behind and followed Jesus.

What Jesus demands of his true disciples, He has undertaken Himself.  Jesus withdrew from the security of his own home.  He no longer lived within easy reach of parental support and encouragement, but within the very providence of God. He abandoned his parents and his profession as a carpenter to follow his Father’s will.  This was very important to His early mission.  For us, if we want to please God, we must also give up everybody and everything.   These are obstacles that get in the way to follow God.  Those, who today faithfully follow Jesus, will experience the overshadowing of a bright cloud from which comes the voice of the Father “this is my beloved Son”.  “Jesus, let us follow you with a detachment from this world.  Give us the grace to give up everything for the eternal Kingdom. ”

                                                      Amen

Thank you, Almighty God, for the many blessings you have given me.  You are a faithful and generous God, and you have blessed me abundantly.

Lord, grant me the grace to be truly grateful for all you have done for me.

I pray that I may have a greater awareness of the many ways you touch my life and an ever-deepening sense of gratitude for your marvelous bounty.

Amen
