From the Homily
Of Father Jose

“Temptatons from Satan”

Today is the first Sunday of the Lenten season, which started on Ash Wednesday.  We observe Lent following the example of Christ who fasted and prayed for us during forty days in the desert.  In today’s Gospel, we found that Jesus faced the temptations of the Satan and that He overcame each temptation with the power of fasting and prayer.  So Jesus overcame the three major vices in the world: gluttony, pride and greed.

Lent is a special time for us to go into our own deserts and to test ourselves.  For this we can use the tools of lent:  fasting, prayer and almsgiving.  To fast is not only to give up food, it is to put aside those things that distract us from God.  Lent should involve much more prayer than what is normal for us.  In intense prayer, we become more aware of who God is, who we are and who we are not.  To believe that we can have any kind of existence apart from God is arrogance of the worse kind.  We must remember constantly who created us and who keeps us alive!

Jesus’ mission was to follow His Father’s will.  If Jesus being God always sought the will of His Father, how much more we should obey the will of our heavenly Father.  Each temptation makes us stronger in faith, if we ask the help of God through prayer.  So let us put on the armor of faith and surrender to God, and then the victory can be ours.

“Lord Jesus, you defeated the Satan.  Help us to understand our enemies’ strategies and to overcome them through faith.”

                                                        Amen
